PSMS Call for Art Rules and Guidelines

Purpose & Scope

We are looking for two-dimensional artwork that can be used for the design of:

  1. the 2025 Annual Mushroom Show poster (keep in mind the addition of text)
  2. a "logo" for the 2025 Ben Woo Memorial Foray
  3. PSMS memorabilia

Eligibility and General Information

Participants agree to be bound by the following rules. Violating any rule may eliminate participant's eligibility.

  • Participant must be a current member of the Puget Sound Mycological Society.
    Not a member? Please consider joining!!!
  • Limit two (2) entries per participant of original artwork. No copyrighted material allowed.
  • Art must visually depict macro fungi somewhere in the piece. (Depictions of lichens and slime molds are allowed.)

Media:

  1. Drawing (e.g., pencil, charcoal, marker, ink, etc.)
  2. Painting (e.g., oil, acrylic, watercolor, gouache, etc.)
  3. Mixed media (collage, etc.)
  4. Photographs
  5. Combination of any/all of the above

AI generated or AI assisted images are NOT permitted, please.

Registration and Submission

  • All submissions must be received by May 18, 2025.
  • Email one (1) copy of each entry to art2025@psms.org. To register, please include the following information in your email:
    • Name
    • Contact information (email, phone, website, if applicable)
    • Medi(um/a)
    • Dimensions, if applicable
    • Title, if applicable
    • Genus and species, if applicable and known
  • Submission format: The submission should be in a high-resolution jpeg or png format to allow for enlargement and possible projection on a screen, as well as a reduction to an informational postcard size for the show, as needed.
  • All entries will be judged anonymously, so please DO NOT sign your work or include your name as a watermark on your artwork submission. After voting is closed, acknowledgement will be added to all entries on the PSMS website along with links to the artist's website (if applicable). Images will remain on our website through August.

Voting & Judging

  • Repeat: All entries will be judged anonymously.
  • Judges: Your fellow PSMS members will vote for 1 of the images submitted.
  • Judging Criteria: Originality, composition, technical merit, color value, emotional response (Some or all of these criteria may apply depending on the medium(a) and perceived intent. Whimsy acceptable!)
  • The top 3 selected images will be reviewed by the PSMS Board, Annual Show Co-chairs and Foray committee to determine use.
  • Winners will be announced at the June Survivors' Banquet/Social Tuesday,
    June 10, 2025

Awards

  • 1st prize: $400
  • 2nd prize: $200
  • 3rd prize: $100
  • Depending on the number and quality of all submissions received, Artistic Excellence and/or Honorable Mention awards may also be given: A one-year PSMS membership.

Copyright

Copyright remains with the artist. However, PSMS will have unlimited and indefinite usage rights only for the winning entries. Non-winning entries will not be used without additional permission from the artist.

Timeline

  • Date open for submissions: Now
  • Submission Deadline: May 18, 2025 (Sunday)
  • Voting online begins: May 20, 2025
  • Voting closes: June 2, 2025 (Monday)
  • Winners notified: June 4, 2025
  • Winners announced and posted: June Survivors' Banquet/Social (Tuesday, June 10, 2025)*

*Original artwork (display ready) may be displayed at the June Social, if space and facility amenities allow.
